Obama's day: Veterans suicide bill, then San Francisco
WASHINGTON — President Obama signs many bills quietly and without much ceremony. The Clay Hunt Suicide Prevention for American Veterans Act will not be one of those bills.
Obama will sign the bill in the East Room of the White House at about 2:05 p.m. ET Thursday, with first lady Michelle Obama, Secretary of Veterans Affairs Bob McDonald, members of Congress and veterans in attendance.
It will be the second law he's signed from the Congress that took office last month, with a possible veto — the Keystone XL pipeline bill — making its way to his desk in the next few days.
The Clay Hunt Act will revamp veteran suicide prevention efforts by exploring new treatments and creating incentives for psychiatrists to work with veterans.
Immediately after the bill signing, Obama departs for San Francisco. He'll give a speech Friday on cybersecurity at the White House Summit on Cybersecurity and Consumer Protection at Stanford University in Palo Alto, Calif. He'll also speak at a Democratic National Committee event.
He'll spend the weekend in Palm Springs, Calif.
