Obama's CIA director: We'll keep pressure on Iran

With or without an Iran nuclear deal, CIA Director John Brennan says the United States will keep pressure on the Iranian government -- over both nuclear development and terrorism.

"The nuclear program is one issue that we're hoping to be able to halt," Brennan said on Fox News Sunday. "But also, we see that Iran is still a state sponsor of terrorism."

So "whether there's a deal or not," the United States will have to "continue to keep pressure on Iran and to make sure that it is not able to continue to destabilize a number of the countries in the region," Brennan said.

The United States and its allies are offering to reduce economic sanctions on Iran if it gives up the means of making nuclear weapons. The parties are working on the details of a possible agreement.

Some members of Congress and Middle East leaders are skeptical of a deal, saying that Iran is determined to get nuclear weapons and expand its influence throughout the region.

Brennan told Fox that the United States will block Iran from getting a nuclear weapon.

"President Obama has made it very clear that we are going to prevent Iran from having that type of nuclear weapon that they -- they were going on the track to obtain," Brennan said on Fox News Sunday. "So if they decide to go down that route, they know that they will do so at their peril."
