Obama's day: Free trade and NASCAR
President Obama faces a busy day Tuesday that covers free trade, climate change, congressional relations, and auto racing.
In the late morning, Obama tapes an interview with MSNBC's Chris Matthews on the congressional proposal to give the president authority to negotiate new free trade agreements.
Trade promotion authority will "pave the way for new, high-standards trade agreements that put American workers first and help American businesses expand," says the White House schedule.
The "roundtable interview" at the Fairfax Chamber of Commerce includes business leaders from Northern Virginia.
Matthews also plans to ask Obama about other issues, including the proposed nuclear agreement with Iran.
This afternoon, Obama hosts an event to honor driver Kevin Harvick and the Stewart-Haas Racing team for winning the 2014 NASCAR Sprint Cup Series championship.
After that, Obama meets with Defense Secretary Ashton Carter.
The president ends the day with a reception for members of Congress. The occasion: Celebrating the recent bipartisan passage of legislation on Medicare payments to doctors -- the so-called "doc fix" -- and a children's health care program.
Obama also spends part of Tuesday putting the final touches on his Earth Day speech for Wednesday, when he flies to the Florida Everglades to talk about climate change.
