Obama's day: China, hostage policy, and gay rights

U.S.-Chinese relations, gay rights, and a new approach to hostage negotiations dot President Obama's schedule on Wednesday.

In the early afternoon, Obama formally unveils the results of his Hostage Policy Review, including a change that would basically allow families to raise ransom payments on their own.

The federal government plans to maintain its no-hostages policy, but will create a new office to work with families who have relatives kidnapped overseas.

Later in the afternoon, Obama will meet with the co-chairs of the U.S.-China Strategic and Economic Dialogue that has been taking place in Washington.

The president caps his Thursday public schedule by hosting a reception to observe LGBT Pride Month.

Throughout the day, Obama and aides will also be dealing with the fallout from the new disclosure of documents showing that U.S. intelligence agencies have spied on French presidents.
