JetBlue to add a second route from Baltimore/Washington

JetBlue will make Fort Lauderdale its second destination from Baltimore/Washington International (BWI).

The carrier did not specify a launch date, saying only that two daily round-trip flights will begin "in November" and that "seats will go out for sale with the upcoming November schedule release."

JetBlue currently flies from BWI to Boston, the carrier's second-busiest hub.

Fort Lauderdale has become a focus city for JetBlue, with the carrier adding numerous new routes and frequencies there in recent years. BWI customers will be able to connect via Fort Lauderdale to other JetBlue cities, including many of the airline's destinations in the Caribbean and Latin America.

"Since beginning Baltimore flights in 2009, JetBlue has become the preferred option for travelers between BWI and Boston," Scott Laurence, JetBlue's SVP of airline planning, says in a statement. "We're expanding upon our successful foundation at BWI and will be providing the award-winning JetBlue experience including the most legroom and assigned seating for customers traveling to Florida and points south."

JetBlue will go head-to-head on the route with both Southwest and Spirit. Southwest, which counts BWI as one of its busiest bases, flies about 10 daily round-trip flights between the BWI and Fort Lauderdale. Spirit, which has started to build up its presence at BWI this decade, flies twice-daily on the route.
