Crystal Cruises reveals details on river plans

Los Angeles-based luxury line Crystal Cruises plans to launch its first European river cruises in March 2017 with two yacht-like, all-suite river ships, the line said.

Under new owner Genting Hong Kong, the two-ship line first disclosed it was entering the river cruise market last month – while also announcing plans to expand with an expedition yacht, three ocean ships and an airline.

The 70-suite Crystal River Cruise ships, to be built by German shipyard Lloyd Werft, will have larger accommodations and a greater space-to-guest ratio than other river ships. They will also provide a "fresh approach" to river itineraries and experiences, the line said in a press release.

Standard suites will be 250 square feet and have walk-in closets, king-size beds and bathrooms with double vanities. There will also be two 500-square-foot Penthouse Suites. Public rooms will include a Crystals' signature Palm Court with a dance floor and glass-domed roof, a fitness center and spa.

The river ships will do overnights in select ports, avoid congested ports and offer shore excursions that include "Active Exploration Adventures," geared towards those seeking "high-intensity" shore side activity, the line said. Crystal said specific itineraries and fares would be available December 1. Bookings also open that day.
