The secret to Arches may be what you can do there that you cannot in some other national parks: amble all over the landscape.

The boundaries of many trails in the national parks are rigid and defined. But in Arches you're relatively free to bound around, hike across boulders and walk right up to famous structures such as Delicate Arch.

It's worth every minute of the hike to the base of Delicate Arch. After all, its image is on Utah's license plate, filmmaker Ken Burns points out.

In the video above hear Burns describe what time of day the light is best to view Delicate Arch and "experience a kinship that is unique in the world."

At Arches, "You begin to realize the importance of light," Burns says, in this "spectacular museum of patient erosion."

As co-creator of the PBS series The National Parks: America's Best Idea, Ken Burns and his team spent months filming in national parks across the United States.

Burns sat down with Paste BN and shared the secrets of Arches National Park and nine other national parks for a special 10-part series, "Secrets of the National Parks."

Check back with Paste BN Travel weekly for new installments of "Secrets of the National Parks," featuring Ken Burns' insights into nine other parks including Yosemite, Yellowstone and more.
