Mary Tyler Moore statue goes back on display in Minneapolis
Mary Tyler Moore is gonna make it once again in Minneapolis.
A statue of the beloved TV actress, star of The Mary Tyler Moore Show, has been taken out of storage and is now on display at the new Minneapolis Visitor Information center.
The statue, along with other public art, had been removed during reconstruction of Nicollet Street, which will be completed in 2017. It will eventually be relocated outside, but was given a temporary home due to popular demand.
“There was a lot of interest and concern about where ‘Mary’ had gone,” Melvin Tennant, president and CEO of Meet Minneapolis, the convention and visitor association for the city, said in a written statement. “It became clear to all of us how important the statue is to the visitors and residents of Minneapolis.”
The Mary Tyler Moore Show ran from 1970 to 1977 on CBS, and won many Emmy awards. Moore played Mary Richards, a single, independent news producer working at a Minneapolis TV station. The statue is on loan from TV Land.
Fans of the show can visit the statue at the information center, at the corner of Nicollet and 5th Streets, during store hours Monday to Saturday from 10 a.m. to 7 p.m. and Sunday from noon to 5 p.m. The tourism bureau is encouraging visitors to take photos and selfies and post to their social media with the hashtag #MaryInMpls.
