United ending nonstops between Denver and Lafayette, La.
United Airlines will end nonstop service between Lafayette, La., and its hub in Denver.
The airline will discontinue its one daily round-trip flight on the route on Oct. 23, according to The Advertiser newspaper of Louisiana. United uses Embraer ERJ-145 regional jets on the route.
United will continue to fly from the Lafayette Regional Airport to its hub at Houston Bush Intercontinental. The carrier's schedule currently shows eight daily round-trip flights for late October and November. The Advertiser says United plans to increase capacity between Lafayette and Houston by flying bigger planes on some of its existing flights between the cities.
Still, Steven Picou -- Lafayette airport's executive director -- hoped for a different outcome for United's Denver route.
"With the tremendous support shown from businesses and families who flew out of Lafayette Regional Airport, we are disappointed with United's decision to cancel the direct service between Lafayette and Denver," Picou said in a statement to the Advertiser.
The decision to end the route comes only about a year after it began.
The Advocate , another Louisiana newspaper, sums up United's Denver-Lafayette route by saying:
"The nonstop service to Denver, which began Aug. 19, 2014, was the culmination of a yearlong effort by the Airport Commission in lobbying United for the service. Families embarking on snow ski trips and other leisure activities flew alongside oil and gas hands and executives working in Colorado's then-bustling energy sector. Since then, the price of a barrel of oil has been cut in half."
