Strikes hit flight schedules at Berlin airports

Passengers faced headaches after a strike by ground staff at Berlin's two airports disrupted filght schedules in the German capital. Dozens of flights were canceled and many delayed.

Members of the ver.di union walked off the job at Berlin's Tegel and Schoenefeld airports for six hours starting at 5 a.m. local time Wednesday, creating disruptions at each. Airport officials counted 112 flights cancellations at Tegel and about two dozen at Schoenefeld.

"Passengers were warned to expect severe delays to baggage handling for flights arriving at or leaving the two airports, and were advised to travel with just hand luggage," the Deutsche Welle TV outlet reported.

Still, despite the disruption, a Berlin airport spokesperson told The Local that “great chaos” had been avoided.

“Many passengers did not come to the airports at all today because of good information released yesterday,” the unnamed spokesperson said.

The union called the strike Tuesday, part of an effort calling for higher wages and better work conditions for its 2,000 members at the airports.

Ver.di also called members at Hamburg and Stuttgart airports out on strike. Several flights in Stuttgart were canceled or delayed, but there appeared to be little immediate effect on flights in Hamburg.
