Man tries to smuggle 94 iPhones into China - strapped to his body
You gotta love this guy’s tenacity, if not his common sense.
A Hong Kong man was stopped at the border crossing with China after officials decided he was acting a little funny. Specifically, he was moving like someone with no functioning joints. After checking his bags, they allowed him to pass through a metal detector and that’s when the fun ensued.
Cut to a back room and the suspect with his shirt up and pants around his ankles, revealing 94 iPhones — including 5s, 6 and 6 Plus models — strapped around his body like a low budget, sci-fi movie robot costume.
Though these iPhone models are available in China, the lack of import tax makes them notably less expensive in Hong Kong. So, cross-border smuggling remains an attractive option, though usually in more moderation than Iron Phone here.
The International Business Times estimates that the iSmuggler had more than 300,000 Yuan ($48,000) in phones affixed to his body, though one assumes there were discounts for the phones taped to his groin.
Let this be a lesson to all you travelers who might be considering a career switch to smuggling: If you get greedy, you get sloppy and then snickering journalists zap photos around the world of your embarrassing police bust in what appears to be video game-themed boxer shorts.
