4 global ridesharing apps that you should know not named Uber or Lyft
Ridesharing has come to be defined by the two most dominant players — Uber, and Lyft. Uber is the undisputed king of the ridesharing game. You can order up a car on Uber at the touch of button in many cities throughout the world. Yet there are other options that get you a bit closer to the locals while potentially saving time and money over long distances.
Tripda
Tripda made it to the top of the list as the most international of the ridesharing apps. The service is available in 13 countries and counting, and recently closed $11 million in funding to expand that number. It focuses on pre-planned, point-to-point journeys, connecting passengers and drivers via extensive profiles and on-site payment processing. Tripda excels at long-distance journeys that either do not have the best transportation connections or are on well-trodden traveler routes.
The service also offers a chat function to protect phone numbers and a "ladies only" designation for women-only trips.
Carma
Carma is all about carpooling. This is the service for those looking to share a ride during a commute or for some other fixed duration. So rather than pairing people on-demand, these rides are set up in advance and are usually related to work.
As such, the pricing is strictly according to distance. The passenger pays $1 for a journey under 1 mile, 20 cents a mile for a journey up to 15 miles and 8 cents a mile for anything longer. The company takes a 15% cut and the rest goes to the driver to cover costs.
BlaBlaCar
BlaBlaCar is the choice for any overland journeys within the UK or Europe. As one of the most popular ridesharing apps on the continent, it has a large number of available rides. The prices are reasonable, the rides are plentiful and the interface is usable (if a bit cartoonish).
RideScout
We love that Ridescout focuses on the mobile first, making it easy to call up a shared commute without having to first post to a website and then communicate across different platforms. Even better than the mobile experience is that RideScout isn't just about shared vehicles — the app shows you all available transportation so you can select the best one for you. This means that taxis, transit, rideshare, bike share, car share, parking and walking are all displayed together.
