New York's homeless land at LaGuardia Airport
The stock bells on Wall Street may be ringing robustly these days, but the only change on the mean streets of New York appears to be a new surge in homelessness, up 13% since Mayor de Blasio was sworn in as mayor in 2014. Seeking shelter, and a respite from the severe winter, many homeless are turning to LaGuardia Airport, often blending in among the chairs, tables, and warm radiators with travelers waiting out layovers and delays.
To the airport’s humanitarian credit, it's allowing them to stay, so long as no one makes any trouble. Some concession workers also give them food and drinks, as well. Non-profits like Volunteers of America are using the opportunity to reach out to the homeless and offer transfer to a proper shelter
But for some, the airport is just too good to give up, especially considering the reported decrepit state of some of the housing available, if available at all. One man even stuck it out at LaGuardia for 20 years, but the results are not nearly as charming as Tom Hanks in Terminal.
