Score! These apps find you free Wi-Fi for 14 days as a travler in Japan
Free Wi-Fi is manna from the digital gods, especially when traveling in a foreign country. The ability to use mapping apps, grab reservation confirmations and generally interact with your phone as you would at home is a wonderful thing. In Japan, however, while the internet speeds may be blazing fast, finding useable Wi-Fi can be challenging for visitors, to say the least.
The country has taken on this challenge by giving all visitors free Wi-Fi for 14 days. Yep, you heard that right! You can now navigate the unique challenges of a Japanese adventure with a country-wide network of complimentary Wi-Fi hotspots.
To find the ones available to you as a visitor, all you need is the companion app to Japan Connected Free Wi-Fi. The service has connected 100,000 hotspots throughout the country, all searchable via the app. Each one is mapped for travelers, who can then connect to any available Wi-Fi hotspots directly via the in-app Connect button.
And just in case that's not enough Wi-Fi for you, there's another app called Travel Japan Wi-Fi that works with premium partners to deliver access to over 200,000 hotspots. Or you could untether from other people's hotspots altogether and rent your own from eConnect Japan.
While both free apps require registration of personal details, the services do eliminate headaches from accessing Wi-Fi networks that require a subscription for access. Japan is literally blanketed with Wi-Fi — even Wi-Fi vending machines — so not being able to gain access to a connection is maddening for travelers. Now there's one less reason to be a disconnected traveler!
