Pilots have to dump 20 tons of fuel to get allegedly drunk guy off Florida-bound flight

It's probably safe to say that Jody Bochner's first bad decision was buying a liter of vodka at Gatwick Airport and pouring it into a cola bottle during a Norwegian Air flight to Fort Lauderdale. His next bad decision was spending 40 minutes in the airplane lavatory where he set off smoke alarms while sucking on his e-cigarette. And then he made at least another half dozen bad decisions when he started banging on the seat in front of him, shouting at assorted other passengers and trying to hit a crew member.

So yeah, Bochner's night ended with handcuffs (and probably one ungodly hangover). But the 26-year-old Miami man also managed to inconvenience 262 passengers (who had to already hate him for hogging the bathroom) and cost the airline €100,000 and 20 tons of jet fuel. After Bochner started swinging at passengers and crew, he was restrained and handcuffed and the pilots made the decision to divert the flight to Shannon, Ireland. That involved dumping enough fuel to make an emergency landing and turn Bochner over to the local authorities.

He ended up spending the night in a Shannon jail cell, and the next morning he was fined €1,000 (around $1,020) and charged with air rage (yep, air rage). Bochner's attorney, Stiofan Fitzpatrick, told the Irish Examiner:

He has no recollection of what happened and is extremely embarrassed and now a very chastened man this morning after spending a night in a cold cell. He realises the seriousness of the matter and is anxious to get back to Miami where he resides with his elderly grandparents aged 84 and 94.

The judge who charged and fined Bochner said that he has 28 days to pay up or he's back in a cell. Good thing he saved money on that duty free booze.
