Fliers somehow don't self destruct during 70-hour flight delay
According to Nielsen, it would take 46 1/2 hours to watch every episode of Breaking Bad. In just over 50 hours, you could see all five seasons of The Walking Dead. Either way, you'd still have plenty of time – like another 20 hours of time – to catch your Norwegian Air flight. Over the weekend, 250 passengers somehow managed to not claw their own faces off while they endured a seventy – that's right, 7-0 – hour delay before a flight from Oakland to Oslo.
Paal-Gunnar Mathisen, a stranded passenger who hadn't yet attempted to drive to Norway, told The Local:
It’s close to a mutiny situation. We must have received six or seven messages about different planned departure times. Today we actually had some hope, because we got a replacement aeroplane. Then [another delay] came, after everything.
From FlightAware's stats, it appears that the scheduled flight from Oakland International Airport to Oslo on May 30 was canceled and the passengers then had to wait until June 2 to finally depart. The beyond-ridiculous delay seems to have been due to Norwegian's continued issues with its fleet of Boeing 787 Dreamliners. That particular aircraft has caused Norwegian an unending series of headaches, passenger complaints and technical problems – and that was before this weekend.
In accordance with Europe's Flight Delay Compensation Regulation, passengers would be entitled to compensation of €600 ($675) as well as expenses for meals, refreshments and hotel stays (Oooh! And Norwegian will pay for the cost of faxes!). Six hundred bucks should cover the cost of a couple of Walking Dead box sets, just in case.
