Jon Stewart deploys his fiercest weapon against United's soda can fiasco — his humor
Jon Stewart might be on the final stretch of a phenomenal run at the helm of The Daily Show, but he's not showing any sign of holding back his legendary weapon of choice: his humor. The latest target is the baffling case of the United flight attendant denying an unopened Coke can to a Muslim during a recent flight.
The situation reportedly occurred because the flight attendant interpreted company policy to not provide unopened cans of beverages since they could be used as a weapon. Of course, most people felt that this was either a poor excuse for discrimination or a misguided company policy inconsistently enforced. Either way, a dumb and inappropriate situation for all involved signals organizational troubles at best and discrimination at its worst.
Jon Stewart lambasted the situation, saying "I didn't realize Muslims were soda can McGyuvers." He also points out just how simple it would be then to build a soda can bomb:
Sounds bad, but you take that soda, add Alka-Seltzer and a seagull, and you've got yourself a bomb on an airplane!
Here's the "Halal Things Considered" segment in full, which covers more than just this one situation of anti-Muslim sentiment, along with spot-on commentary from the show's Religious Correspondent Hasan Minhaj:
