KLM's new smartphone app wants to be your best pal and travel companion

KLM has launched a new smartphone app and it's trying really hard to be your best friend, travel companion and the one airline you'd Swipe Right for. The app, which is available for both Apple and Android devices, hopes to learn each customer's preferences and predict their behavior in the future, whether that means memorizing your meal selections or knowing that you're more likely to pick a window seat.

The sleek-looking app has a very simple (but elegant) booking and flight selection tool, one-tap check-in (and reminders when check-in is open) integrated payment options and, of course, mobile boarding passes. The app also promises that selecting – and swapping – seats will be as simple as tapping your finger against your screen. In a press release, Tjalling Smit, the Senior Vice President E-Commerce for Air France KLM, said:

With this new app we have reached the next level in anticipating our customers’ needs, keeping them one step ahead of their journey. And this is only the beginning. Together with our customers we will continuously improve and further develop the app and our other mobile services.

The airline promises that the app's APIs could "be extended to any other digital touch point," which is also intriguing, especially if syncing the app with, say, the airport kiosks would create a smoother check-in process, better inform travelers about potential upgrades or of any delays. Or, to take it even further, if the app knows that you're partial to a certain route or have repeatedly searched for a particular destination, perhaps it could alert you when fares fall. If the app not only simplified the reservation and check-in process, but also eliminated the need to repeatedly refresh other fare-finding apps or websites, then not only would it be a solid travel buddy, I'd probably marry it too.
