Say goodbye to Sbarro, because this app lets you order from airport restaurants in advance
You only have 10 minutes before your flight starts boarding and you're angrily shifting your weight from foot to foot while 20 people in front of you decide what toppings they want on their flaccid slices of airport pizza. When you hear a small, overly groomed woman ask, "Right, but how much gluten is in the crust," you decide that you'd rather starve to death somewhere over Middle America than wait another minute in line. We've all been there (and that woman is probably still there) and that's where AirGrub comes in.
This new app, which is available for both iPhone and Android, allows travelers to order and pay for airport food in advance, pick it up at a designated time in their departure terminal and then continue to their gates without wondering what constitutes justifiable homicide. And before you ask, yes you can even order alcoholic beverages.
To get your AirGrub on, you download the app, select your departure time and terminal and are then presented with the dining options and menu items that apply. You pay for your order in the app and you're good to go – and you can place your order any time, whether you're shuffling through the security line in your sock feet or you still have a week before you fly.
Right now, AirGrub is available at three restaurants in three terminals in both San Francisco and Boston, and the company has plans to expand to additional airport later this year (The options that are available at SFO are part of the Tastes on the Fly restaurant group, which also operates concessions in Boston, Denver and New York/JFK, which could be a tip-off for where AirGrub might expand next).
"When we travel, we don’t walk around looking for which hotel to stay at, so why wait until you are at the airport to decide what to eat?” Surya Panditi, the CEO of AirGrub rhetorically asked. That's a good question, one that I'll answer right after I order several Anchor Steams to go.
