Win a travel filmmaking scholarship in Colombia this fall from World Nomads
Do you enjoy shooting video? Doing some serious traveling? Ever considered making a career out of either — or simply thought of taking a short career break — but thought it was impossible to get your big break?
World Nomads, a travel insurance company that caters to an adventurous road warrior clientele, is offering an aspiring travel filmmaker the chance of a lifetime. Shoot a short film that catches the judges' eyes, and you could be flown from your home country to Bogota, Colombia, for 10 days, all expenses paid, this fall to create a travel documentary about people living on the Pacific coast of Colombia. Below is the documentary film created from the 2013 scholarship winner and instructor.
Entries are due September 7, 2015. To enter, create a short film (three minutes or less) about a person who inspired you to travel. Write a journal entry about your film for World Nomads, and then upload it on either YouTube or Vimeo. If you’re over 18, speak conversational English, and you’re not a professional filmmaker, you’re qualified to enter.
In Colombia, you’ll meet up with scholarship leader Brian Rapsey, a veteran filmmaker and instructor. As you travel to the far west of Colombia with Rapsey, you’ll work with him on his documentary film. At the same time, you’ll receive hours of highly personalized instruction on your filmmaking skills and mentorship on your career.
Not a filmmaker? No worries, mate. The Sydney-based company also offers travel writing, photography, and food scholarships every year for 1-3 participants. Citizens of any country are welcome to apply.
I can confidently say this scholarship is legit; for the 2014 World Nomads travel writing scholarship, I was the leader. Along with the three winners in Berlin, Germany, I spent 16-hour days traversing the city, learning everything there is to know about travel writing and the travel-writing business. It can be a career changer. If you want to break into the travel or filmmaking industry, I know of no better opportunity.
