Annual price study says that fares from this airport are the most affordable

The analysts at Cheapflights have pulled out their calculators and have prepared the site's annual Airport Affordability Index, which ranks 101 domestic airports based on the cost of the average airfare. This is the sixth year the travel search engine has pulled that information together and a lot of the rankings have changed – drastically, in some cases – from last year's Index. The top airport on the list was the Cincinnati/Northern Kentucky International Airport, which had an average fare of $199. Atlanta's Hartsfield-Jackson International Airport was No. 2 ($231), followed by Dallas Love Field ($251) in the No. 3 spot. Cincinnati and Atlanta ranked No. 77 and 73, respectively, on the 2014 Index.

On the other end of the spectrum, the most expensive fares were found at Honolulu International Airport ($794), which ranked dead last in 2014, too. Yeager Airport in Charleston, West Virginia was the only other airport where the average fare was more than $700 ($742), but since it only services 10 destinations in nine cities, that's somewhat unsurprising. What does make us raise one eyebrow like a cartoon villain is realizing that, of last year's top 10, only two (Love Field and Long Beach Airport) are still in single digits. In 2014, the most affordable fares were found at Charleston (SC) International Airport, with an average of $191. This year, CHS has fallen to No. 37 ($347).

The one asterisk on the Index's findings could be that only fares for the month of June were analyzed, so it isn't necessarily representative of fares for the entire year. Cheapflights also explained that it used "a mix of popular domestic and international destinations " to determine its rankings, but doesn't explain if – or how – those more expensive international fares were weighted against the domestic ones. But we still appreciate the site's annual calculations.
