Take a look at the iconic retrofuturistic TWA Flight Center before it becomes a hotel
In 1962, the future looked more, well, futurey.
The amazing TWA Flight Center at JFK was the last project of Eero Saarinen, a Finnish architect known for his ultra neo-futuristic style. In 1962, just after Saarinen's death, the Flight Center opened for service as a JFK terminal. Its beautiful curving lines and symmetry are a product of its jet age era, but it doesn't look outdated. More like the future just hasn't come yet.
The Flight Center was recently photographed by well known architectural photographer Max Touhey for the purpose of edification, because this extraordinary structure, essentially closed to the public since 2001, will soon become Jet Blue's TWA Flight Center Hotel. While it's unclear what will remain of the current structure, Touhey said:
“I think it’s important that every significant space has a visual record to go back to. This one in particular is a symbol of the Jet Age and a true architectural masterpiece, inside and out.”
As a relic from the past, when air travel seems to have had more glamour, we hope this remarkable structure remains as intact as possible.
