Bad mobile design costing companies millions

Jumio, a "leading identity management and credentials company," just released a 2015 Mobile Consumer Insights survey, and the results will make business execs — travel companies included — want to tear their hair out. According to the report, billions of dollars are left on the table because of poorly designed apps.

Looking at the behavior and transactions of 2,019 adult mobile device users in the United States, Jumio discovered more than half of Americans (56%) had abandoned a mobile transaction before completing. The top reason was slow loading times (36%), which might have to do with bad internet connection, but also but also because App designs were to complex. The No. 2 reasons for abandoning was because of difficult navigation.

Considering the mobile transactions that were completed in 2014 totaled $325.2 billion globally, with $56.67 billion of that in the United States, it’s mind-boggling to imagine how much was lost from abandoned transactions, which Jumio pegs at $24.5 billion in 2014. Add to this a stat from a 2013 report by Compuware that 79% of app users are only willing to retry an app once or twice if it fails the first time, and it becomes clear that poor app design could doom a business.
