Awww, Ohio! Dayton brings back retro airport feature
Dayton International Airport is reintroducing a once-popular feature within its terminals that aims to make life a little easier for frazzled flyers. Biometric boarding passes, solar-powered airport energy farms, and hologram gate agents may be the latest in airport technology, but in Ohio, public pay phones are the next big thing.
Dayton Airport officials say nine public phones have been installed throughout the airport, including in the airport's pre-security and baggage claim areas. Director of Aviation Terry Slaybaugh says of the retro rollout:
“Nearly everyone carries a cell phone today, of course. But every now and then a cell battery dies, or a phone may be needed for any number of reasons. Dayton International Airport is happy to provide this convenience.”
Hilariously, each phone comes equipped with a video monitor displaying instructions on how to use a public phone. After all, we live in a time where younger travelers may never have seen a payphone before, outside of the prison phones on Orange is the New Black.
Local calls are free of charge, but of course most calls from the airport are unlikely to be local. Calling cards, another old school staple, can be purchased from several newsstands and gift shops within the airport.
Ohio, you stay just the way you are: perfect.
