United is altering routes in order to avoid weather-related issues
New United CEO Oscar Munoz already has publicly pledged to improve the airline's performance. That's sounds lovely, but it doesn't really mean much unless it actually happens. That said, there's already one indication that Munoz could back up that promise, as the company announced that it would be changing up its domestic route scheduling to avoid having to delay or cancel flights due to bad winter weather.
United's game plan is to increase its "out and back flying" between November and January, as it explained in an internal company post to employees, which a United spokesperson sent to Road Warrior Voices. Airplanes will be scheduled to take more roundtrips out of the same hub, rather than spending the day criss-crossing the country. This should help limit any "ripple effect" as the United describes it, and it keeps aircraft close to maintenance and supply centers. That sounds like a great idea to us — at any time of year.
According to United, passengers shouldn't notice any big changes. We'll hold out judgement until Snowmageddon 2016.
