This startup wants to pack everything for your next trip — even the razors and running shorts
The cost of checking a bag is probably the most annoying part of air travel. Sure, you might spend that same $25 in the terminal for an overpriced bag of M&Ms and an issue of People, but at least you have something to show for it. Give that cash to the airline and the best you can hope for is that your own stuff will be waiting for you in baggage claim. A new startup called unPack wants to eliminate that hassle — as well as the hassle of carrying anything bigger than a briefcase — by delivering everything you'll need for your trip directly to your hotel.
There are currently two sizes of unPack packages, the "Complete Winter unPack" and the "Companion Winter unPack." The former includes oxford shirts, chinos, a Columbia down jacket, a Ministry of Supply hoodie and even workout gear — basically everything but underwear and shoes. The latter is just the Columbia jacket and a second Ministry of Supply jacket, as well as a hat, gloves, scarf and an umbrella. Both unPack versions also include toiletries (which you can keep) and phone chargers. The full unPack starts at $59.99, while the companion version starts at $39.99 (sorry, ladies. You can only score your own Companion Winter unPack for now).
"We experienced the pain of lugging around bags on a daily basis," Aaron Liskov, one of the co-founders of unPack, told Travel + Leisure. His co-unPacker, Andrew Zahornacky, was making three or four cross-country flights a week, and realized that his own clothing was looking "more haggard" with every trip, especially since there wasn't always time to launder it between flights or even refresh the contents of his own suitcase. So unPack was born, out of their own desires to have less wrinkled shirts when they arrived at their next destination.
UnPack is a good idea, but it isn't perfect — at least not yet. Other than having an incredibly unGoogleable name, its claim that it "costs less than checking bags" isn't exactly right. Even if you have to pay $25 each way (as you would on most major, non-budget airlines), the full unPack is still slightly more expensive. Also, the idea that a traveler would want to pay 40 bucks for two winter jackets, a scarf and woolen hat seems slightly flawed. If the weather in New York (which is currently unPack's only available city) is chilly enough to warrant that much outerwear, you'd probably just wear it there, rather than shivering all the way from LaGuardia to your hotel lobby.
If you want to land, safe in the knowledge that your work attire will have sharp creases and smell better than a bottle of Febreeze, a service like DUFL that stores and ships your own suits might be a better option. It uses commercial shipping options, so it isn't limited to a specific destination and — since they're your own clothes — you're guaranteed a perfect fit. Or you could always sign up for an airline's co-branded credit card, almost all of which give cardholders a free checked bag. Either way, you'll have more M&Ms money.
