Pilot of delayed flight writes letters for 31 students onboard, excusing them for missing school
When easyJet pilot Wayne Mott made an announcement over the plane's intercom, telling the students onboard that he would write letters to their teachers explaining why they'd missed class that day, he was kidding. Totally kidding. But then 31 of them — and one teacher — took him up on his offer.
The students and their families were scheduled to fly from Cyprus to London-Gatwick Airport on Sunday, November 1, but heavy fog delayed the flight for a ridiculous 20 hours. As a result, the kids weren't able to make it to school on Monday, November 2.
And although Mott might've regretted ever turning his microphone on (probably about the time he started writing letter number two), at least he had fun with it. According to the Petersfield Post, Mott wrote a note for eight-year-old Joshua Skuse which said:
"Dear Mrs Lee, I am very sorry that Joshua was not at school today. He has been involved in a secret mission in the Eastern Mediterranean Sea at very short notice. We hope this mission will soon be complete and that he will see you bright eyed and bushy tailed on Tuesday morning."
Skuse took his note to school to show off to his classmates, and Skuse's mother praised Mott and the easyJet staff for keeping the kids entertained during the lengthy, lengthy delay. The Post later reported that Skuse's teacher asked Mott to come in to speak to her class to talk about what it's like to be a pilot, so he might want to stay off the intercom between now and then.
