More than 1 million guests will be staying in an Airbnb on New Year's Eve
So where are you going to be when you wake up on New Year's Day? There's a good chance that you, your unrelenting hangover and a glittery tiara you don't remember wearing will be starting 2016 in a stranger's rental property. According to data released from Airbnb, more than one million guests have booked New Year's Eve accommodations through the platform — an 81% increase from last year. The site says that its guests will be ringing in 2016 in 17,500 different cities in 150 different countries around the world.
This will mark the first time Airbnb has welcomed more than a million guests on one night; its previous Biggest Night Ever was August 8, 2015, which came close to the seven-digit mark, but did not exceed it. That number also highlights how big and how quickly Airbnb has grown. Five years ago, only 2,000 guests used Airbnb to book their New Year's Eve stays, a number which jumped to 550,000 last year before swelling to one million just 12 months later.
Airbnb's most popular New Year's Eve destinations are New York, Paris, London, Sydney and Barcelona. An estimated 47,000 guests are expected to Airbnb it in New York on December 31, edging out the 45,000 who are opting for Paris and 35,000 who are London-bound. New York's appearance at the top of the list is unsurprising, for a couple of reasons: it's Airbnb's largest market and it's also the U.S. city with the most expensive holiday hotel rooms, making Airbnb even more appealing. Chip Conley, Airbnb's head of hospitality, told Skift:
"It’s encouraging to see Paris up there. After what happened a month ago, it’s good to see Paris rebounding.”
Although Airbnb might give travelers a break from surging holiday hotel rates, that doesn't mean that it isn't offering the highest of high-end accommodations too. It reports that some of its most expensive New Year's Eve listings all top out at more than $2,000 per night, including a 4-bedroom chalet in Steamboat Springs, Colo., a 5-bedroom condo in Vail, Colo. or this $4,000-per-night 5-bedroom villa in the Dominican Republic.
Wherever you choose to stay, be safe, enjoy the fireworks and pack some extra ibuprofen.
