This hotel gives each guest a citywide portable Wi-Fi Buddy at check-in

While traveling abroad, you no longer need to hunt down a public Wi-Fi signal in order to use your cellphone free of international roaming charges — at least not in Hong Kong (or if you have T-mobile). Guests of the Mira Hong Kong hotel now receive a personal, portable wireless internet hotspot, called a Wi-Fi Buddy, at check-in.

The devices broadcast an internet signal across all of Hong Kong, allowing guests to have constant internet access as they embark on the town. Each Wi-Fi Buddy is provided to guests free of charge, and is capable of connecting to a whopping 10 wireless devices, so guests no longer need to make tough calls about which combination of gadgets they'll need to get through the day.

Kenneth Sorensen, Mira's head of hotels and serviced apartments, tells Business Traveler accessing the internet while on a business trip is now easier than ever:

“Guests staying in our hotels no longer need to go through the learning curve of getting familiar with a third-party smartphone provided by the hotel, which was the case until now.”

All 492 rooms at the Mira Hong Kong are now outfitted with the devices, which boast 4G network speeds. At 10 devices a pop, that's almost 5,000 wireless devices supported by just one hotel.

And while those 4G speeds can't compare with the world's fastest Wi-Fi — also provided by a hotel — what they lack in speed, they more than make up for in security, allowing guests the chance to avoid the risky wireless internet available in many tourist traps. And to think, it was just a year ago that hotels decided to start giving away free Wi-Fi. My, how far we've come in such a short time!
