Thursday's forecast: It's gonna be a wet one

Scattered showers and potentially severe thunderstorms are expected to pop up from the Upper Great Lakes to the Central Plains. A cold front should increase the chances for showers and thunderstorms from the Northeast to the Middle Mississippi Valley. Isolated to scattered showers and thunderstorms are likely from the Carolinas to the Gulf Coast. In the West, showers and thunderstorms are forecast across Northern California, the Intermountain West, parts of the Southwest, Great Basin and Central Rockies.
Weather history for Aug. 22: In 1989, evening thunderstorms in the central USA produced golf-ball size hail at May City, Iowa, while lightning struck a barn in Fayette County, Iowa, killing 750 hogs. And in 1992, Hurricane Andrew made landfall in South Florida as a Category 5 storm with wind guests estimated in excess of 175 m.p.h. Estimated damages exceeded $20 billion, more than 60 people were killed and approximately 2 million people were evacuated from their homes.
