Friday's forecast: Cold front heads South
A cold front heads to the South Friday along with scattered showers and thunderstorms. The Northeast will also have cooler conditions but will stay mainly dry, along with the Midwest. The West will have high temperatures and some rain.

Cooler and drier air will spread across the Midwest and Northeast on Friday, while the Southeast will continue to see a few clouds and showers. In northern California and the Pacific Northwest, showers and thunderstorms are likely on Friday, which could help douse wildfires in those areas.
Weather history for Aug. 23: In 1933, the Chesapeake-Potomac hurricane moved over Norfolk, Va., and Washington D.C. A tide seven feet above average flooded businesses in Norfolk, and damage in Maryland was estimated at $17 million. In 1970, dry thunderstorms ignited more than 100 fires in Washington State. More than 100,000 acres burned.
