A wet Wednesday is on tap all the way from Texas to the Great Lakes thanks to a cold front sliding across the country, which will bring numerous showers and thunderstorms. Some of the heaviest rain is likely in the lower Mississippi Valley.

The East Coast will see mild temperatures and increasing clouds throughout the day, while skies are forecast to stay clear in the Southeast.

Most of the West and the north-central states will have a sunny day. Temperatures will be on the cool side in the northern Rockies and Plains, and quite mild in California and the Southwest.

Weather history for Oct. 16: In 1816, rains ended a long drought in northern New England, extinguishing wildfires that had raged after a very dry September. In 1990, Tampa hit 91 degrees, the 136th day the city had hit 90 degrees or higher that year. In 1997, the temperature in Santa Yrez, Calif., rose from a morning low of 44 degrees to an afternoon high of 103 degrees.
