Calm weather is expected across most of the country on Friday, with the far northern tier seeing the bulk of the damp weather.

Coastal and valley rain and mountain snow is again likely in the Pacific Northwest, while snow will be the main story in the northern Rockies. Other damp and cloudy areas include the northern Plains, eastern Great Lakes and interior Northeast. None of the precipitation should be very heavy, however.

Scattered showers are also possible in South Florida, with breezy conditions forecast.

The rest of the country will be mainly dry and sunny, with temperatures that are close to average for early November.

Weather history for Nov. 8

In 1972, a powerful storm hit the Northeast with heavy rain, flooding and high winds. In New York City, winds gusted to 60 mph and a record 5.1 inches of rain drenched the city. In 1992, St. Paul Island, Alaska, had its first thunderstorm in over 40 years.

In 2003, the temperature plummeted to -13 degrees in International Falls, Minn., the coldest temperature ever so early in the season for the self-proclaimed "Icebox of the Nation."
