Thursday's forecast: Storms central US, wet New England

The heat will be on high across the southern tier on Thursday while severe thunderstorms rattle portions of the central U.S.
Southern tier: While the Southwest and Texas bakes under triple-digit heat -- where more records are possible -- the Southeast will see highs in the 90s, with high humidity and scattered afternoon storms.
Central U.S.: Hail and high winds, along with heavy rain, will again wallop the central Plains and the mid-Mississippi Valley. Non-severe thunderstorms are possible throughout the rest of the Plains.
Northeast: Cool and damp weather will prevail in New England and the Northeast, with highs only in the 60s and 70s.
Weather history for June 5: In 1925, the temperature hit 100 degrees in both Philadelphia and Washington, D.C. In 1990, Pittsburgh dropped to a record low of 36 degrees.
In 2004, 56 people were injured by lightning strikes in Pasadena, Texas.
