Friday's forecast: More storms for the Southern Plains
Most of the West and the northeastern U.S. will see a sunny Friday, but ongoing showers and thunderstorms will pepper the Plains and Southeast.
West: Other than a few scattered thunderstorms in the Sierra Nevada, the entire western third of the country will be clear and dry Friday. The Southwest will again be very hot, soaring into the low 100s.
Central U.S., Southeast: Showers and thunderstorms will bring heavy rain -- and possible flooding -- from the central Plains to the Southeast coast on Friday. Some severe storms could blast areas from Colorado to Mississipi.
Northeast: Most of the region, including the Great Lakes and Mid-Atlantic, will be mild and dry on Friday. Some showers could dampen northern New England.
Weather history for June 6: It rained on this day in Phoenix in 1972, after a 160-day dry spell. In 1985, the temperature hit 105 degrees in Macon, Ga.
In 1998, a record low of 28 degrees was measured in Alamosa, Colo. In 2007, winds gusted to 103 mph in Lake Casitas, Calif.
