Thursday's forecast: Storms to rattle the South

Severe storms are forecast to rattle the South while scattered showers and thunderstorms pelt most of the East and parts of the West on Thursday.

South: Severe thunderstorms are likely in portions of Texas, Louisiana, Arkansas and Mississippi, with large hail and high winds possible.

East: Ongoing warmth, humidity and thunderstorms are expected for most of the East Coast on Thursday. Temperatures will remain cool in New England.

West: Showers will dampen the Northwest and Rockies while clear skies and typical June heat will bake the Southwest.

Weather history for June 12: In 1969, 5 inches of snow fell on Great Falls, Mont. In 1980, a record low of 37 degrees was set in Atlantic City, N.J.

In 1994, a severe hailstorm battered South Dakota, destroying 70,000 acres of crops.
