Storms will again slam much of the country while the heat continues to build in the West and South.

Plains: Showers and severe thunderstorms are likely again in the northern and central Plains with Nebraska and South Dakota expected to see the worst of the storms.

East: Slightly cooler temperatures and some showers are forecast across the Mid-Atlantic and Northeast.

South: The heat and humidity will be on high in the most of the South Friday with some typical afternoon thunderstorms possible.

West: While some afternoon thunderstorms will dampen parts of the Rockies and Southwest, most of the immediate West Coast will stay clear and dry. The Northwest will be on the warm side.

Weather history for July 11: In 1990, record heat scorched the Northwest, with highs of 105 degrees in Pendleton, Ore., and 104 degrees in Boise, Idaho. In 1999, record lows were set in Dodge City, Kan. (48 degrees) and Goodland, Kan. (47 degrees).
