Tuesday's forecast: Rain for the East and West

Flooding rain and severe thunderstorms will lead to a dreary day for much of the East, while scattered thunderstorms are possible in the Rockies and West.
East: Heavy rain could lead to flash floods in the Mid-Atlantic and Northeast. The rest of the eastern third of the nation will also see some scattered thunderstorms and humid conditions.
Central U.S.: The Plains will see clear skies and warm to hot temperatures. Highs will soar into the 90s and 100s in Texas and Oklahoma.
West: Scattered showers and thunderstorms are possible across most of the western third of the nation, with the exception of bone-dry California.
Weather history for August 12: In 1936 in Kansas, all-time record high temperatures were set in Wichita (114 degrees) and Concordia (116 degrees). In 1971, Chicago hit a record low of 51 degrees.
In 2004, Tropical Storm Bonnie made landfall near Tallahassee.
