Wednesday's forecast: Rain East, severe storms Northwest
While morning rain and storms should drench parts of the East, severe storms could hit the Northwest.
East: Following a rainy morning in the Northeast and Mid-Atlantic, cooler, drier weather will move in during the afternoon, though clouds and showers will linger in New England. Some showers and thunderstorms will also dampen portions of the Southeast and Gulf Coasts.
West: Severe thunderstorms are likely in portions of Oregon, Washington and Idaho, with hail and wind the primary threats. Afternoon storms could also dump rain on the Southwest and Rockies.
Central U.S.: Most of the central portion of the country will be clear and dry. Temperatures will be in the cool 70s in the Great Lakes and upper Midwest. High heat will bake the southern Plains.
Weather history for Aug. 13: In 1978, four inches of snow fell in Salmon, Idaho. In 1979, the temperature dropped to a record low of 46 degrees in Rochester, N.Y.
In 2004, Hurricane Charley made landfall as a Category 4 storm in Charlotte Harbor, Fla., with winds of 145 mph. More than 100 homes were destroyed; an unofficial wind gust of 173 mph was reported.
