Friday's forecast: Rainy central, southern U.S.

Much of the central and southern U.S. will see a soggy end to the week, while parts of Colorado will endure some unwelcome September snow.
Central, southern U.S.: Numerous showers and thunderstorms are likely across the southern tier on Friday, all the way from New Mexico to the Carolinas. A few strong to severe storms are possible across the Gulf Coast states on Friday in the region's warm and humid air mass.
The Upper Midwest and Great Lakes will also see a few showers and cool temperatures.
West: Most of the western third of the country will be clear and sunny Friday. The central Rockies, including the city of Denver, will see some morning snow and sleet.
Northeast: The Northeast and New England will see a sunny, mild fall day, as the heat of Thursday heads to the south.
Weather history for Sept. 12: In 1960, Hurricane Donna roared up the East Coast, hitting southern New England. A 138-mph wind gust was reported at Blue Hill Observatory, Mass. In 1979, Hurricane Frederick hit the Mobile Bay area; a gust of 145 mph was recorded in Dauphin Island.
In 1989, snow fell in Cheyenne, Wyo., and near Denver, Colo. In 2011, Austin, Texas, hit a record high of 105 degrees.
