Thursday's forecast: Soggy Southwest, cool Northeast

Most of the weather action Thursday will be in the western half of the country while the East stays mostly pleasant and dry.

Southwest: Drenching rain from the remnants of Hurricane Odile will continue to be an issue in the Southwest, most notably in Arizona, New Mexico, and Texas. Flash flooding will remain a problem through the day.

East: Other than some showers in the Carolinas and thunderstorms in Florida, the rest of the eastern third of the nation will be dry. Temperatures will be cooler than average in much of the Northeast, Great Lakes and Ohio Valley:

West: Some showers are forecast to dampen portions of the central Rockies, Great Basin and Pacific Northwest Coast Thursday. Temperatures should be cooler in California than in recent days.

Weather history for Sept. 18: In 1926, the Great Miami Hurricane hit, killing hundreds. A wind gust of 155 mph was recorded in Fort Lauderdale. In 1990, the temperature dropped to record lows of 35 degrees in Flint, Mich., and 34 in Youngstown, Ohio.

In 1998, a record high temperature of 103 was measured in Pierre, S.D. In 2003, Hurricane Isabel made landfall in North Carolina.
