Friday's forecast: Summerlike across central U.S.

Summerlike warmth will spread across much of the country on the final Friday of September, though a few spots in the East and Far West will be rainy.

Central U.S.: Clear skies and above-average temperatures are forecast for most of the central U.S. from the Rockies to the Midwest. One area that will see some rain and thunderstorms will be southern Texas.

East: Most of the eastern third of the nation will be dry and mild Friday. Morning rain will dampen New England. The Southeast coast and Florida will continue their soggy streak, with thunderstorms likely.

West: The Southwest and most of California should be sunny and warm, while showers soak the Northwest.

Weather history for Sept. 26: In 1963, San Diego reached 111 degrees, the city's highest temperature ever recorded. In 2002, Tropical Storm Isidore brought rain and wind to the Gulf Coast.

In 2004, Category 3 Hurricane Jeanne walloped Florida with high winds and heavy rain.
