Wednesday's forecast: Severe storms Plains, soggy Fla.

Severe thunderstorms will again rattle the central U.S. Wednesday while more showers will soak Florida.

Central U.S.: A soggy, stormy Wednesday is on tap in the Rockies, central and northern Plains, and Upper Midwest. The storms could reach severe levels in portions of Kansas, Nebraska, and Missouri, which could feature strong winds, large hail and possibly some twisters.

Southeast: The Gulf Coast and especially Florida will continue their wet ways on Wednesday. Thunderstorms are likely in Orlando and Tampa.

Northeast: Most of the northeastern U.S. will see dry weather, though some spotty showers are possible in New England.

West: The West will be dry and mild on Wednesday. A heat wave will start to bake southern California on Thursday.

Weather history for Oct. 1: In 1893, a hurricane's storm surge killed 2,000 people in Louisiana. In 1987, Portland, Ore., hit 92 degrees, the highest ever recorded in October.
