Tuesday's forecast: Umbrellas in the East

Much of the nation will enjoy a tranquil Tuesday, though a few showers are possible in portions of the eastern U.S. and the Southwest.
Eastern U.S.: Some rain showers will dampen the eastern Great Lakes states and the Ohio and Tennessee Valleys on Tuesday. The rain will move into the Mid-Atlantic and Northeast by day's end.
The Gulf Coast and Florida will also see some afternoon showers and storms.
West: Most of the western half of the nation will be dry and warm on Tuesday. A few afternoon storms are likely in the Desert Southwest as the remnants of Tropical Storm Simon approach from the Pacific.
Weather history for Oct. 7: In 2000, a trace of snow was recorded in Tulsa, the earliest date on record. In 2001, the temperature dropped to 14 degrees in Rhinelander, Wis.
In 2003, the Northern Plains saw record heat, with a high of 90 degrees in Huron, S.D.
