Wednesday's forecast: Soggy Northeast, Southwest

The nation's two main soggy spots Wednesday will be the Northeast and the Southwest. Most of the rest of the country will be clear and dry.
Northeast: A storm will bring some showers and thunderstorms during the morning hours from Pennsylvania to Maine. After the rain ends, gusty winds and cooler temperatures will spread across the region.
Southwest: The remnants of Tropical Storm Simon will bring some showers and storms to portions of southern California, Arizona and Utah. Some flooding is possible in Arizona.
Florida, Gulf Coast: Some brief afternoon showers are possible along the Gulf Coast and in much of Florida.
Weather history for Oct. 8: In 1871, fueled by drought and strong winds, the Great Chicago Fire killed 250 people. A forest fire that same day killed about 1,000 people in Wisconsin.
In 1982, three feet of snow fell in Lead, S.D. In 1994, the temperature soared to 100 degrees in Los Angeles, tying the record high.
