Friday's forecast: Drenching rain central U.S., hot South

The USA's weather Friday will be divided into four parts: Rainy in the center, cool in the north, hot in the South, and mild and dry in the West.
Central, eastern U.S.: A large swath of the central and eastern U.S., stretching all the way from the central Rockies to the mid-Atlantic, will see rain and storms Friday. Some of the heaviest rain will be in portions of Oklahoma, Missouri, Kansas and Arkansas, where some flooding is possible.
West: Most of the western third of the nation will be dry and sunny on Friday.
Northern tier: Most of the northern tier from the Rockies and northern Plains to the Northeast will be clear but chilly on Friday, with high temperatures only in the 40s, 50s and 60s across the region.
South: Summerlike temperatures will bake the southern tier Friday, all the way from Texas to the Southeast. Highs will soar into the 80s and 90s for most of the region.
Weather history for Oct. 10: In 1979, an early season winter storm dumped snow on the mid-Atlantic, including 1 inch at Dulles Airport, Va., and 2 inches in Philadelphia. In 1991, a heat wave baked California. Records were set in Los Angeles (107 degrees) and Sacramento (100 degrees).
In 2005, 10.5 inches of snow fell in Denver.
