Tuesday's forecast: Stormy Northwest, Plains chill

Another storm will plaster the Northwest on Tuesday with rain, wind and snow, while cool fall temperatures spread across much of the north-central U.S.

Northwest: Coastal and valley rain and mountain snow and strong winds are forecast across the Pacific Northwest and northern Rockies.

North-central U.S.: Chilly, breezy conditions are expected in the northern Plains and upper Midwest. A few snow showers are also likely in northern North Dakota and northern Minnesota.

East: The East Coast will be warm and dry on Tuesday, though a cold front will be sliding in from the Ohio Valley and Mississippi Valley, where some thunderstorms are possible.

Weather history for Oct. 28: In 1971, wintry weather hit the northern Rockies; More than two feet of snow fell in Lander, Wyo., and a temperature of -15 degrees was measured in Big Piney, Wyo. In 1999, Chicago hit a record high temperature of 80 degrees.

In 2008, an early season snowstorm slammed the Northeast. Some spots in New York and Pennsylvania picked up more than a foot of snow.
