Thursday's forecast: Soaking rain for East Coast

Thursday should be a soggy day for much of the East and South, while mainly clear and mild conditions prevail in the Southwest and Plains.
East: Most of the eastern third of the country will see soggy conditions on Thursday, with the heaviest rain likely in the Northeast and Mid-Atlantic, where severe storms are possible.
The Southeast and Great Lakes will also see showery weather, with some snow forecast in Wisconsin and Michigan. Florida will be dry and mild.
Plains: Other than ongoing downpours in far southern Texas, most of the Plains will be dry.
West: Showers will again dampen the Pacific Northwest, but most of the rest of the western third of the country will see clear skies and mild temperatures.
Weather history for Nov. 6: In 1953, a big snowstorm plastered the mid-Atlantic, dumping up to 30 inches of snow in the Pennsylvania mountains. In 1961, hot, dry Santa Ana winds fanned wildfires that scorched 15,000 acres in southern California.
In 2005, an outbreak of tornadoes killed 28 people and injured 230 in Kentucky and Indiana. In 2008, a blizzard hit the northern Plains; 45 inches of snow fell in Deadwood, S.D.
