Wednesday's forecast: Stormy in California, New England

More rain and snow will fall in California and elsewhere in the West on Wednesday, while much of the rest of the nation sees a relatively quiet weather day.

West: Rain is again likely Wednesday along the West Coast, all the way from southern Washington to southern California. Floods and mudslides are possible. Heavy snow is forecast in the Sierra and lighter snow in the Rockies.

New England: Snow and ice will make for a rough travel day across much of northern New England.

Eastern U.S.: A few spotty showers are expected in Florida, the Carolina coast, and the Deep South. Some scattered flurries are also possible in the Appalachians of West Virginia and Pennsylvania.

Weather history for Dec. 3: In 1976, temperatures tumbled to -21 degrees in Watertown, N.Y., and -3 degrees in Buffalo, the city's earliest sub-zero low on record. In 1983, a wind gust of 92 mph was measured in San Francisco, closing the Golden Gate Bridge and leaving 400,000 powerless.

In 2005, record heat spread over the Plains. The temperature reached 82 degrees in Texarkana, Texas.
