Tuesday's forecast: Stormy Northeast and Northwest

The Northeast and the Northwest will see the nation's worst weather Tuesday while most of the central U.S. sees clear skies.

Northeast: Snow will pelt the interior Northeast on Tuesday while cold rain and wind lashes the big cities and coastal areas. A wintry mix is likely in the Ohio Valley and Appalachians.

Northwest: Heavy rain will drench Washington, Oregon and northern California while heavy snow whitens the Cascades.

Central U.S.: Sunny skies are forecast for most of the Plains and Rockies.

Weather history for Dec. 9: In 1986, a December record high temperature of 81 degrees was set in Richmond, Va. In 2002, Rochester, N.Y., dropped to a record low of 2 degrees.

In 2009, a powerful storm walloped the eastern U.S. It brought snow to New England and severe storms from the mid-Atlantic to Florida, including a tornado in Georgia.
